Pirjo Honkasalo to Shoot Orenda

One of Finland’s most recognised filmmakers, Pirjo Honkasalo is preparing a new film titled Orenda. The shooting will begin in Estonia early next month, the main shooting period taking place in Finland in the remote archipelago of Turku later this year.

The captivating relationship drama dealing with the themes of guilt and mercy is written by established writer-director-actor Pirkko Saisio, who will also be performing the other of the two main roles in the film. The other main role will be performed by Alma Pöysti, who made a breakthrough in Tove and will also be performing this year in the new film by Aki Kaurismäki. Third key role in the film will be performed by Hannu-Pekka Björkman.

Honkasalo is a highly established director, cinematographer and screenwriter, with a career spanning over 50 years. She has won countless awards for her films and has had well over thirty retrospectives dedicated to her work worldwide.

Misha Jaari and Mark Lwoff from Bufo are producing the film together with Estonian Allfilm (Ivo Felt & Pille Rünk) and Swedish Plattform Produktion (Erik Hemmendorff). The production is supported by The Finnish Film Foundation, Yle, Estonian Film Institute, Estonian Cultural Endowment and Svenska Filminstitutet. In Finland the distribution is handled by B-Plan Distribution. Premiere of the film is expected in 2025.
