“Until my elderly years, I had buried and cemented my own childhood. A few years ago, it all erupted like Mount Etna. For the longest time, I have waited for someone to say to me: ”I want to hear your story.” -Sinna Perho, October 13th, 2010

Etna is a documentary film about breaking the cycle of transgenerational distress. The subject matter and starting point of the film is the director’s correspondence with her 94-year-old Sicilian great-aunt and namesake, Sinna Perho, over the past 12 years. In the film, the volcano Etna expands from a symbol of repressed grief and trauma to an active, functioning organism with its own agency.

Finnish premiere in the National Competition at DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival in February 2026.
