Pirjo Honkasalo’s Concrete Night has been selected for the main competition programme of International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Plus Camerimage. The festival will be organised for the 21st time in Bydgoszcz, Poland on 16th -23rd November.

Concrete Night will be competing for the main prize of the festival with 13 other films, including Joel and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis, Ron Howard’s Rush, Lee DanielsThe Butler and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.

The cinematographer of Concrete Night Peter Flinckenberg is one of the most courageous and experienced cinematographers of the younger film generation in Finland. He has worked both in documentaries and features, and his latest works include Miss Blue Jeans (by Matti Kinnunen, 2012) and Hella W (by Juha Wuolijoki, 2011).

At the festival Concrete Night will be presented by Pirjo Honkasalo and Peter Flinckenberg but also gaffer Jani Lehtinen and colourist Jussi Myllyniemi, who have been in a significant role when creating the visual style of the film.

Concrete Night premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and it will open in cinemas in Finland this Friday. The film has already received some praising reviews:

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER / John DeFore: “Moody tale of a boy’s downfall is a visual knockout. — Stunning to look at and chilling at its core, Concrete Night is a tale of innocence lost in a place where having retained innocence at all is something of a feat.”

INDIEWIRE / John Anderson: “Concrete Night is a mood piece and a poem, a coming-of-age story and a parable about how one generation warps the next. It’s also, not coincidentally, one of the most gorgeous things to appear at Toronto International Film Festival.”

FILMMAKER MAGAZINE / Lauren Wissot: “With patient and nuanced pacing Honkasalo creates an emotional reality that sneaks up on you – even as you know where the story’s headed. Everything changes most, it seems, when life stays the same.”
